    When a check is dishonoured, the drawee bank immediately issues a ‘Cheque Return Memo’ to the banker of the payee, mentioning the reason for non-payment. The dishonor of a check is a criminal offense and is punishable by imprisonment for up to two years, a monetary penalty, or both.

    The Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, is applicable in cases of dishonoring a check. This Act has been amended many times since 1881.
